About Us

History

The International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies was founded in the spring of 1982 by a group of scholars in Kyoto in response to the mounting international attention to Shin Buddhism.
There are approximately 350 members in 6 districts; about 200 members are in Japan and 150 in the other districts..The members include not only academics, priests, and laypersons affiliated with Shin Buddhism but also those of other academic expertise and religious tradition. The IASBS welcomes participation of those with wide range of interests and specialization within and beyond Pure Land Buddhism.
The IASBS presidents have been chosen among internationally renowned scholars involved in Pure Land Buddhist studies. In chronological order, they have been:

District level conferences (held biennially in the "off-years" of the main IASBS conference) have been held in the European District in such places as Vienna, Lausanne, Dusseldorf, and Antwerp. Other district level conferences in 2010 are being planned for the Japan and South American districts.

The IASBS annually publishes The PURE LAND, an academic journal in English that contains articles (many from papers presented at these conferences), essays, translations, and book reviews. This is the only scholarly journal specifically dedicated to the study of Pure Land Buddhism. All the past volumes of the journal are currently being put up online with the American Theological Association Series (updates regarding this will be available on our website in the near future).

The association also publishes a newsletter twice a year, in the spring and fall. These are available on our website.

A Message from the President

I would like to send my heartfelt greetings to you, and thank you for taking interest in our association.

Since taking office, I have been working with the new officers and district representatives to build on the legacy left by the past administration. As I mentioned previously, I would like to see the IASBS consider the following objectives for the near future:
  1. A greater use of email and the internet as a medium for our communication, such as an electronically-distributed issue of the IASBS Newsletter
  2. An increase in our membership that includes people of wider background; and interests.
  3. Helping to nurture the next generation of scholars.
  4. Enhancing the visibility of IASBS among other academic and religious communities.
The IASBS has a unique role to play as the only worldwide organization focused on Jodo Shinshu and Pure Land Buddhist studies. We, therefore, work to raise the visibility of Pure Land Buddhism internationally, while simultaneously offering academic perspectives to various Shin and Pure Land religious institutions and their activities.

Accordingly, your active participation is needed to accomplish these goals. Please look around you to see how you can contribute. Please do not hesitate to send comments and criticisms about our association to me and/or to the District Representative, Treasurer or Steering Committee members.

Best wishes,
Kenneth K. Tanaka
