The world is now facing a period of deep crisis, economically, politically,
socially and spiritually. Shinran, too, lived in a world of upheaval and
dislocation and, through his experiences and deep reflections, came to
describe a person of Shinjin as a "true disciple of the Buddha."
It seems, however, that the significance of the notion of a "true
disciple of the Buddha" for contemporary society has not been adequately
discussed in our Shin Buddhist sangha and expressed to the world community.
Therefore, we would like to hold this conference under the theme of "True
Disciple of the Buddha: The Mission and Challenges in Contemporary Society."
The year 2011 marks Shinran's 750th memorial. It is fitting, therefore,
that scholars and adherents of Shin Buddhism from around the world should
meet in Kyoto in this memorable year to discuss the problems confronting
contemporary society and consider how we, as a community aspiring to be
"true disciples of the Buddha," should meet those challenges.
The conference will be sponsored jointly by five Shin Buddhist universities:
Doho University, Kyoto Women's University, Musashino University, Otani
University and Ryukoku University. It is hoped that this collaborative
effort, the first in the history of our association, will serve to foster
the awareness that we are all members of one community.
